Shoaib stayed in his room when he was not selected for the inter-city championship trials, according to a family member.
After being rejected by his hometown team in the Pakistan Cricket Board’s inter-city championship, a young player from Hyderabad in southern Sindh province attempted suicide. Family members took the fast bowler Shoaib to the hospital Tuesday after he cut his wrist and was in a critical condition. Shoaib, according to a family member, was depressed following his coach’s decision not to choose him for the inter-city championship trials.
An immediate family member reported that they found him in the bathroom of their room with his wrist slit and unconscious. “He is still in serious condition,” the family member reported.
An under-19 Karachi player, Muhammad Zaryab, hung himself at home in February 2018 after being dropped from the city’s under-19 cricket squad.
