Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Rashid Khan shine as Afghanistan overcame Bangladesh by seven wickets in the third one-day international to prevent a whitewash in the three-match series on Monday. Gurbaz scored an unbeaten 106 off 110 balls to push Afghanistan to 193-3 in 40.1 overs after Rashid’s 3-37 helped the visitors bowl out Bangladesh for 192 runs in 46.5 overs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

“I am proud of the way the players came to the pitch today with their heads up,” Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi said in Chittagong.

Gurbaz and Riaz Hassan put up 79 runs in the first stand. Shakib Al Hasan dismissed Riaz for 35 but Gurbaz never allowed Bangladeshi bowlers to gather momentum.

He smashed seven fours and four sixes and added exactly 100 with Rahmat Shah for the second wicket to take Afghanistan close.

Mehidy Hasan stumped Rahmat for 47 to break the stand and trapped Shahidi’s leg before for two following over but they came too late, with Afghanistan just a few runs away from the win.

It was Gurbaz’s third hundred in only nine ODIs off 103 balls.

“I had some injuries in the last game but I was absolutely OK today. It wasn’t enough to win the series, but we made a strong comeback “said Gurbaz, the game’s most valuable player.

After captain Tamim Iqbal won the toss and opted to bat first, Bangladesh opener Liton Das hit 86.

Farooqi took out skipper Tamim Iqbal for just 11, putting an end to the opening stand’s 43 runs. The second-wicket partnership of 61 runs was added by Shakib Ali Hasan and Liton.

Azmatullah Omarzai removed Shakib after he pulled one onto his stumps, leaving the home side in disarray after Rashid removed Mushfiqur Rahim (7) and Yasir Ali (1) in consecutive overs.

Liton’s innings were interrupted by Gulbadin Naib’s excellent catch at long-on from Mohammad Nabi, who also collected 2-29.

Liton smashed seven boundaries in a 113-ball inning, his fourth ODI fifty, following a century in the previous game.

Tamim Iqbal, Bangladesh’s captain, remarked, “We played well in the middle, but lost our rhythm towards the end.”

Pakistan lost by an innings and four wickets to Bangladesh in their first two matches.

Bangladesh will now host two Twenty20 internationals on March 3 and 5 at Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, with the first match taking place on March 3.
