Buttler missed the 4th Test to be with his new baby.

Jack Leach, a spinner, has also been selected.

England’s fifth Test against India begins on Friday at Old Trafford with wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and left-arm spinner Jack Leach in the team.

England has recalled left-arm spinner Jack Leach and wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler for the final Test against India. The hosts trail 2-1 after a 157-run loss at The Oval, but coach Chris Silverwood has made just minimal changes to his squad. Despite capturing 28 Test wickets in six matches on visits to Sri Lanka and India, Leach hasn’t played a Test since March.

As vice-captain, Buttler missed the fourth Test to attend the birth of his second child but is eager to return.

Silverwood and Root must decide whether pacemen James Anderson and Ollie Robinson can rally for one final shot at the Indians.

“I think Anderson and Robinson were outstanding. I’m happy of their contributions to the games, their work ethic, and their dedication to the club “Silverwood”

“But we must monitor it.”

Root’s side lost a two-match series to New Zealand earlier in the season and must win both games to avoid becoming the first England side to do so since 1986.

“India has been a big challenge,” Silverwood remarked.

“You can see why they are perhaps the world’s best squad. They appear to get half an opportunity and run with it.”

Joe Root (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.
