Chris Woakes, an all-arounder for England, won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month title for July 2023 after a spectacular performance in the Ashes. Woakes, who won the Ashes’ Player of the Series award, was named the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for July 2023, beating out fellow Englishman Zak Crawley and the Netherlands’ Bas van Leede. This honor of being named July’s ICC Men’s Player of the Month is greatly appreciated. It’s always good to be rewarded, especially when it’s a public vote,” Woakes said in an interview with ICC, noting that the team’s success in the Ashes was due to everyone’s efforts.
I’m just glad that the show was so successful at capturing the public’s attention and imagination. He said that having such enthusiastic fans was a tremendous boost, and the series itself was a blast to take part in.
The England all-rounder sat out the first two Tests, and the Three Test Series at Headingley found England trailing by a score of 2-0. England needed an early impact from the replacement players, and Woakes provided that.
After being absent from the Test cricket scene for over a year, Woakes returned with a bang, claiming three wickets in each innings, including the crucial ones of Marnus Labuschagne and Usman Khawaja. More importantly, his 32* helped England stay in the series during a dramatic pursuit.
In the first innings of the fourth Test, Woakes repeated his earlier feat of heroic bowling by claiming his sixth five-wicket haul in Tests. The weather ultimately decided the outcome of the Manchester Test, which finished in a tie after the final day was rained out.
Woakes won the series with a Man of the Match performance in the last Test at The Oval. Before playing more havoc with the ball in the second innings, the 34-year-old scored a critical 36 runs in the first.
