Boyd Rankin, an Irish pace bowler, declared Friday his withdrawal from international cricket and cross-provincial cricket, ending an illustrious 18-year career. Rankin is one of only 15 cricket players in the history of representing two-Test Cricket countries. In 2003, at the age of 19, the 36-year-old seamer made his international debut in Ireland.
Between 2003 and 2020, he played 153 times for Ireland in two rows, divided by a three-year stretch for England, during the 2014 Ashes Test, where he made his test debut against Australia.
“Removing from international cricket is always a difficult decision, but now is the best time to quit. Since 2003 I’ve put my heart and soul into cricketing professionally and enjoyed it every minute, “Rankin said Cricket Ireland’s retirement announcement.
Rankin has had a good 15-year career with several sides in the English Cricket county, but particularly 11 years at the Cricket Club of Warwickshire County.
“I never dreamt of playing as much for Ireland as I did and I’ll never forget to tour the world playing in many World Cups and pulling on an Irish jersey. I have also had a long career in county cricket, particularly when I spent 11 years with Warwickshire where we won the County Championship, the 50-off competition twice, and the T20 Blast in 2014 “Rankin said. Rankin said.
“I always sought to be the best player I could play and the highest possible level, so making my test debut for England was a proud moment in a period when Ireland wasn’t a test country. I’ll miss all the guys I’ve played and like the wins that we’ve had along the way “Added the former pacer.
Ranging known for his natural bounce and his ability to move the ball both ways took 229 wickets for Ireland at 23.39 – ending his career as the eighth highest Irish wicket-taker internationally.
His two most prolific wicket seasons were 2018 and 2019, with respectively 30 and 47 wickets, showing his continued national importance during recent campaigns.
“The World Cup wins – the World Cup in 2007 to beat Pakistan and Bangladesh to bring Irish cricket on the world map and win 2011 against England – will be my greatest memories and achievements. It was a memorable moment for Ireland to play Ireland’s first men’s test match as well as take Ireland’s first test wicket, “Rankin remembered that.
Among his wickets, maybe his unforgettable scalp was in 2018 when in men’s Malahide cricket against Pakistan, he claimed the first-ever wicket for Ireland.
However, three wickets he took against the same opponents at the World Cup 2007 as part of that landmark Irish triumph were also at the height of his career.
