In 61 deliveries, Phillips scored 100 runs after hitting Mahesh Theekshana for a four toward midwicket. He scored a high total for New Zealand by the time their innings were through with 10 fours and four sixes. Lahiru Kumara eventually bowled him out for 104 (64) before New Zealand, who had chosen to bat, amassed a total of 167/7.
Speaking of the game, on Saturday at Sydney Cricket Ground, New Zealand defeated Sri Lanka by 65 runs to reclaim the top spot in Group 1 of the Super-12 stage of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
Despite being once down to 15 for 3, the Blackcaps reached 167 for 7 thanks to Glenn Phillips’ century.
With Daryl Mitchell, Phillips put together an 84-run fourth-wicket partnership. The latter was bowled by Lahiru Kumara on the fourth delivery of the last over of the New Zealand innings, but Phillips continued to play his shots from the other end and quickly reached his second T20I century.
In order to defend the total, New Zealand bowled Sri Lanka out for 102, with the help of Trent Boult, who finished with 4 for 13, Mitchell Santner, and Ish Sodhi, whom each took two wickets.
The leading run scorers for Sri Lanka were Dasun Shanaka (35 off 32) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (34 off 22).
