In the first session of the last day in which India clung on in the efforts of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, former skipper Michael Vaughan questioned the lack of help by head coach Chris Silverwood.
In the first session of the last day India took a step back into the game, former British Captain Michael Vaughan questioned the failure of ‘all-powerful’ head coach Chris Silverwood to intervene. “These figures, in particular with Ashes coming in December, are concerning, but I am more concerned that we still have a real understanding of what kind of Chris Silverwood squad England wants to be,” Vaughan stated.
“He [Silverwood] spoke about the need of initial inputs and then discipline, but that’s just good sense. Test cricket for each team on the earth. There was no sense of what England wanted either tactically or in terms of mentality: the performances were a mish-mash of a few exceptional shows glossing over a lot of ordinary cricket, “Vaughan explained. “The nadir arrived at the fifth day of the Second Test in that hour and 20 minutes before lunch, one of the worst things I’ve ever seen in my England Test Team,” he wrote.
“Plenty has been written and said how England had lost a complot in the bid to bounce Jasprit Bumrah off, and Joe Root has definitely been let down by some of his older players who were supposed to have intervened with him sooner.
“International coaches may not have the advantage of a tactical timeout as we see in the 100 – a novelty I would welcome in the test game – and still there are methods of acting,” he wrote.
“Why didn’t Silverwood send somebody out into the pitch with a drink and ask Root what the hell was going on? I know that’d have been what Duncan Fletcher had I suffered from a brain fade on the field, “He continued. He continued.
“He [Chris Silverwood] must prove he can change the momentum for England in this series because there is only one way and that is towards Virat Kohli, who has his hosts where he wants them – hot beneath his collar and not straight thinking and making dumb mistakes,” Vaughan added.
