The loss against the Mumbai Indians in the last over of the IPL 2023 season was the latest setback for the winless Delhi Capitals.
The David Warner-led Delhi Capitals lost by six wickets to the Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, keeping their winless streak alive in the current season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023. Andrich Nortje’s steady bowling placed pressure on Cameron Green and Tim David as MI needed only 5 runs in the last over. In the last pitch of the game, with two runs still needed, David played the ball straight to Warner at deep mid-off, but Warner’s throw to Abhishek Porel was wide, allowing the batters to complete the double and win. A video of head coach Ricky Ponting and director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly’s reaction to the attempt has gone popular on social media.
Mumbai Indians cruised to a six-wicket victory thanks to three-wicket hauls from Jason Behrendorff and Piyush Chawla, as well as half-centuries from Rohit Sharma and Tilak Verma. In a nail-biting contest that came down to the final ball, MI recorded their first victory of the current season.
For MI, Rohit had the best score (65 out of 45) while Tilak contributed (41 out of 29). Mukesh Kumar took two wickets for DC, and Mustafizur Rahman took one.
Rohit Sharma, with the Mumbai Indians chasing a total of 173, got the run chase off to a blazing start when he smashed Mukesh Kumar for two fours and one six, collecting 14 runs in the opening over.
Then, in the second over, Ishan Kishan followed the captain’s lead by smashing Mustafizur Rahman for three consecutive fours. In the fifth over of the game, the pair scored 50 runs together. MI scored 59 runs without losing a wicket after five overs.
Kishan, the opener, scored 31 runs, but he was out because of a mix-up in the running between the wickets. Kishan went back to the pavilion after being dismissed by Mukesh Kumar and Lalit Yadav by running out.
Next up was Tilak Varma at the plate. Rohit reached 50 with a single in the 11th over, needing only 29 balls to do so. Tilak and Rohit, at the crease, showed a resolute approach and put the Delhi bowlers through their paces by taking full advantage of the favorable batting circumstances.
The Mumbai hitters did an excellent job of striking the ball about and hitting the loose balls that the Delhi bowlers gave them. In the 16th over, Tilak smoked one four and two sixes in a row.
Mustafizur Rahman delivered a crucial breakthrough for his team when he bowled out Rohit, who had been batting steadily, for 65 in the 17th over.
With only 18 balls remaining, MI needed to score 26 runs. Cameron Green and Tim David took over the batting after Rohit was removed, and they won by six wickets in a nail-biting final over against Delhi Capitals.
Mumbai Indians (MI) bowlers bundle out Delhi Capitals (DC) for 172 runs, despite a fifty from captain David Warner and a 54-run explosion from Axar Patel.
