Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) chose Shreyas Iyer as their new captain on Wednesday, ahead of the upcoming IPL 2022 season. KKR paid Rs 12.25 crore for Shreyas during the recent IPL mega auction in Bangalore. As captain of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise in the 2020 season, Shreyas took the team to its first IPL finals victory under his leadership. As a result of his absence throughout the first half of the 2021 season due to injury, DC was led by Rishabh Pant. In the UAE portion of the season, Shreyas returned, although Pant was retained as captain by DC. Shreyas was then traded to KKR in the auction after being dropped by the team. Shreyas replaces Eoin Morgan as captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders, who led the team to the final of the IPL 2021.
“We are happy firstly to have been able to successfully bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction and to have the opportunity for Shreyas to lead #TeamKKR,” KKR CEO & MD Venky Mysore stated. As a quality batter at the top level, he’s pleased everyone, and we’re convinced he’ll excel as the leader of #TeamKKR.
Brendon McCullum, coach of the two-time IPL champions, says he is excited to work with Shreyas Iyer.
“I am thrilled that Shreyas Iyer, one of India’s most promising young leaders, will be taking the helm at KKR. McCullum says he’s been impressed by Shreyas’ game and captaincy skills from afar, and he’s eager to work with him to help KKR achieve its goals.
Shreyas Iyer said he was “very honored” to be given the opportunity to lead a prominent team like KKR when he accepted the leadership of the franchise. The IPL brings together the top players from across the world, and I’m excited to be the captain of this incredible team. To everyone at KKR, I want to express my gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the team’s leader. I am certain that together, we can achieve our goals. I look forward to making Kolkata and the Eden Gardens a part of Indian cricket’s rich heritage and making our fans proud of us as a squad! Korbo Jeetbo!
Under the leadership of former India batter Gautam Gambhir, KKR won the IPL twice: in 2012 and 2014.
