If Kohli wins the T20 World Cup as captain, Gambhir said, it will be the cherry on top.
For the first time in his career, India’s Virat Kohli will be the captain during the T20 World Cup.
Indian T20I captain Virat Kohli will step down at the end of the current tour
The only ICC limited-overs title Virat Kohli hasn’t won as a player is the 2014 T20 World Cup final, which India won, and the 2016 semi-final, which India lost.
In Oman and the United Arab Emirates, the ICC T20 World Cup is currently in its group stage. However, cricket fans are eagerly anticipating the Super 12 stage, which will begin on October 23. On October 24, India will face off against archrival Pakistan in the Super 12 stage, where they will also face Afghanistan, New Zealand, and two other qualifiers. With the Indian team starting as one of the favorites for the title, there is a lot of pressure on them. In 2007, India won its first T20 World Cup, but it hasn’t made it past the semifinals since. In 2014, they were defeated in the championship game, and in 2016, they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Virat Kohli, who is captaining the team in this edition’s T20 World Cup for the first time, will hand over the reins after the tournament. After losing the Champions Trophy final in 2017 and the ODI World Cup semifinals in 2019, Kohli and the Indian team are desperate for an ICC tournament victory.
MS Dhoni, India’s former captain, and current mentor captained the team to its last ICC title in 2013. India’s win percentage has risen dramatically since Kohli took charge of the team in all formats. However, they have yet to triumph in a major international competition, and both the players and the supporters are eager for some success in the form of a trophy.
On the Star Sports show FOLLOW THE BLUES, host broadcaster Gautam Gambhir discussed Kohli and the team’s desire to win again.
I am sure that the entire team will be looking to win the T20 competition as well because it has been a long 14 years of wait,” Gambhir said.
According to the 2007 World T20 champion, “I’m sure that Virat Kohli will be captaining India for the last time in the T20 format, it’s about just winning the tournament” and “him winning as captain will be icing on the cake”.
The only ICC limited-overs title that Kohli hasn’t won as a player is the 2014 T20 World Cup final, which India won. Kohli also helped India reach the 2016 T20 World Cup semifinals, which they lost to Australia.
