Zimbabwe thrashed the United States by 304 runs on Monday in the Cricket World Cup qualifiers, thanks in large part to 174 not out from 101 balls from Sean Williams. This is the second-largest winning margin in terms of runs in ODI history. Hosts Zimbabwe posted their best one-day total with 408-6 off 50 overs, and then they bowled out the United States for 104 to secure their fourth consecutive Group A victory. When India beat Sri Lanka by 317 runs in the opening match of the year in Thiruvananthapuram, they came within two runs of setting a new record for the largest victory margin in a one-day international.
While wicketkeeper Joylord Gumbie scored a solid 78 runs at the top of the order, it was Williams who stole the show as Zimbabwe accelerated once their stand-in captain got to the crease.
Sikandar Raza scored 48 runs off 27 balls, while Ryan Burl smashed 47 runs off only 16 deliveries, but Williams was caught in the deep in the penultimate over despite hitting 21 fours and five sixes.
Three American batters reached double digits, but the team as a whole performed poorly, with Richard Ngarava and Raza each taking two wickets and three runs outs adding insult to injury.
